Frequently Asked Questions

I’m happy to answer any questions you have about working with me, but to save us both some time I’ve added a few FAQs here.

  • I graduated in 2004 and in my first proper job I was paid to write stuff. I've been writing stuff ever since. I launched The Word Lady in 2012 (with absolutely no idea what I was doing) – and thankfully that gamble paid off. Read my story to find out more.

  • This comes up quite a bit. Understandable. You work in education, so you want a copywriter who’s written about education before, right? Hmm… Maybe you do. Maybe you don’t.

Aside from the odd really specialist sector – such as law or medicine – most general copywriting principles can be applied to any sector.

You don’t necessarily need me to understand your special industry words and phrases, because you should be using plain, simple language that anyone can understand.

To give you an idea of the number of times I’ve needed to get to grips with a new topic, here are just a few things I’ve written about:

    soap · technology · property · walking · car insurance · engineering, domestic abuse · art · education · recruitment · soft toys · finance · photography · hammocks · training · oil & gas · film production · dairy genetics · bread · pharmaceuticals · renewable energy · careers · childhood trauma · teepees · mortgages · cosmetics · mobile phones · fishing equipment · sculpture...

    Seriously, the list is massive.

  • All sorts, really. Web pages, articles, press releases, blogs, brochures, university prospectuses, social media posts – loads of things.

I write copy & content for brands who want to promote their products or services with decent writing.

  • Short answer: no.

Long answer: I write for a living, so any time I spend writing a free sample is time I could be writing for clients who are already paying me.

Feel free to take a look at my copywriting portfolio for samples of my work or contact me with any questions. If I have something on file that’s relevant to your project I’ll happily send it across.

  • I’m available for meetings, content briefings and other similar occasions, which are almost always do-able remotely. I work from my home office, where I can make a pot of tea and crack on with writing away from the hustle and bustle of your office environment. And yes – I do use an actual teapot.

  • I usually quote on a per-project basis. This means the amount you pay will depend on the scale and scope of your project.

Contact me with details of your copywriting project and I’ll come back to you with a quote for the work.

If you’re an agency or a company looking for ongoing copywriting support, my day rate is £400.
